1863  Birth of Edvard Munch, Norwegian painter.

1901  Marconi sends radio signal across Atlantic Ocean. Signal sent from Cornwall in England to St John’s in Newfoundland.

1913  The Mona Lisa which had been stolen from the Louvre two years earlier is recovered under a bed in Florence.

1915  Birth of American singer Frank Sinatra.

1982  More than 20000 women joined hands around Greenham Common airbase in England to protest at plans to site nuclear missiles at the base.

1989  Leona Helmsley the New York billionairess is sentenced to four years in prison and fined $7 million for tax evasion.  She is quoted as saying “only little people pay taxes”.
